ALILA VILLAS ULUWATU The best hotel in Bali, Indoneasia

amazing. But since it's spanking new and not entirely without incident it probably needs time to settle in. Totally energising, with stone, bamboo, lava rocks and sleek lines, it's a kind of touch-me, feel-me texture city. You want to sit in it, lie on it, lick it. Each room has its own pool looking out over the Indain Ocean and its own butler; before you arrive he will have been beavering away, puffing up the pillows you asked for and filling the fridge with your preferred midnight snacks. This is the first hotel on Bali to get the nighest level of certification for environmentally sustainable design. With stretching sea views, it's a gorgeous, restful hidey-hole. The two  restaurants, Cire and Warung, are packed to the gills with detail(2,500 batik printing blocks, stunning layouts), and satay lunches by the pool come with a hamper filled with everything you could possibly want, which saves lots of hand-waving for waiters. The problem with places this beautiful is that people are less forgiving of them: each little fault (tiny wine glasses, some leftover spray paint, a regrettable chicken curry) gets exponentially exaggerated. Iron these out and then, quite possibly, it could be the best hotel in Bali, a cross between Como Shambhala on the beach and the Balines version of amanjiwo.
